RiverData.org - About

Public-interest water data.

RiverData.org is built and published by Jan Rezab through Terra 2100. It brings official measurements, published models and clearly labelled calculations into one view of the world’s rivers and reservoirs.

How to read the data

RiverData does not present every value as equally certain. Sensor measurements, third-party model output, calculations made here and fixed reference figures are labelled separately. The source registry names the publisher, dataset, update cadence, formula and known caveat behind each displayed field.

What has - and has not - been reviewed

The provenance registry was last checked internally against the serving endpoints on . Automated tests reject missing source links, retired endpoints and incomplete data classifications. RiverData has not yet received an independent scientific or editorial review. We say that plainly because internal checks are not a substitute for external scrutiny.

Launch notes

Material product and accountability changes

  1. Flood situational awareness on the main map

Expanded the Chao Phraya cascade to 20 reviewed main-stem sensors. The longitudinal water profile and local bank comparisons distinguish measured bank exceedance from supplied critical thresholds. Backfilled 2021 through September 2026 with daily minima, maxima, sample means and counts from 3,524,236 official observations. Newer sensors begin in April 2025 and missing days remain gaps. Added history range controls and explicit source provenance.

Fixed Thai station clicks that fell through European map defaults. Inspecting map points now preserves the current camera, while explicit country and river navigation can still frame a place. Added 126 verified official Thai DWR CCTV locations, including the Phra Phuttha Yot Fa Bridge camera in Bangkok, with embedded public snapshots and provider links.

Flood satellite imagery covers the entire visible map at the selected zoom. Removed the moving shaded analysis square and its duplicate flood overlay; local exposure calculations remain in the detail panel without masking the wider flood picture.

Restored Floods under Deep dives as a separate global event and river-analysis section. The main map retains its independent Flood situation filter; the deep dive links directly to flood imagery and Bangkok drainage on that map.

Flood situation is now a camera-preserving map filter. Global NASA satellite flood imagery is visible at broad scales, with local thresholds and exposure analysis appearing only after zooming in. Reservoir discovery remains independent of the flood filter and preserves loaded markers while the map moves. A separate Cameras filter adds 90 verified public CHMI sites with provider images and official full-size viewing links; camera freshness limitations are explicit.

Flood awareness now lives on the main map in the existing RiverData design. The Flood situation layer combines dated flood areas, threshold exceedances, rainfall, tide predictions and exposed facilities in the map detail panel. Distinct labelled symbols and a visible key replace unexplained dots. Satellite uncertainty and missing observations are stated before any exposure estimate.

Added dated Thai river observations, Bangkok canal levels and thresholds, canal flow readings, measured rainfall and official three-day station histories. Thai river measurements now enter the regular ingestion and observation archive, with a mapped Chao Phraya river profile.

The flood workspace now combines global NASA VIIRS satellite flood classification with WorldPop population estimates inside detected flood cells and OpenStreetMap hospitals, schools and emergency facilities. Cloud-obscured areas remain unknown. GISTDA summaries add Thai population, buildings, roads, hospitals, schools and crop exposure across 1, 3, 7 and 30-day windows.

Loaded all 35,040 official hourly tide predictions for Bangkok Port, Bangkok Bar, Royal Thai Navy Headquarters and Phra Chunlachomklao Fort throughout 2026. The workspace shows daily highs, lows and hourly MSL predictions in Bangkok time, with full-year downloads and original source tables. The official 148-station BMA pump dashboard is linked, with its automated-access limitation stated explicitly.

Global disaster reports distinguish unreported deaths and displacement from confirmed zero counts. Source observation dates, model years, thresholds and spatial exposure limits are visible alongside the data.

  2. A new homepage for RiverData

The homepage now starts with the river map. River details sit beside it, with the status summary and basin comparison below.

A redesigned footer and native arrow icons make navigation clearer on desktop, tablet and mobile.

  3. Slapy and Vltava reservoir updates

Live reservoir readings and history now load independently, with clearer observation times and usable storage figures. The river reservoir table no longer duplicates dams, and available reservoir data stays visible while river gauges load.

Dated drought context explains Slapy's role in supporting downstream flows. Instantaneous zero outflow is distinguished from daily releases.

  4. Live United States river networks

Expanded RiverData to 126 reviewed official gauges across 13 major United States rivers, including 112 USGS stations and 14 NOAA NWPS gauges on the Tennessee River. Each mapped river now has an ordered source-to-outlet cascade, with current stage and discharge ingested every 10 minutes alongside mapped dams, storage and nuclear water links.

  5. Rain and river response

Added current modeled rainfall, ERA5 basin history and rain-to-flow analysis to tracked river views. Rain history now follows the river profile and exposes exact daily values on hover or with keyboard arrow keys.

  6. Maps, cascades and gauge charts for publishing

Rebuilt RiverData embeds around the same live components used in river details. Publishers can now place a river map, source-to-outlet cascade or gauge-history chart directly in another site, with shared caching and links back to the full RiverData detail.

  7. New front page and river benchmark map

Introduced a dashboard-led home page and coloured mapped rivers by their current seasonal benchmark, making continental conditions easier to scan before opening a river profile.

  8. Paks water-risk tracker

Added live Danube context for Paks, unit-level generation and outage notices, while keeping verified water constraints separate from unexplained output shortfalls.

  9. Fresher, more reliable readings

Improved river-pulse backfills, kept reservoir inflow and outflow observations paired, corrected Dutch gauge timestamps and removed obsolete feed-freshness warnings.

  10. Public identity and review status

Published the accountable entity, author, registration number, methodology path and current independent-review status.

  11. Global flood watch

Added current GDACS flood events and expanded river coverage, including dedicated Myanmar profiles.

  12. Nuclear water status

Added EDF unit-availability notices with explicit separation of verified water constraints from generic environmental notices.

  13. Product launch

Launched RiverData.org as a public-interest view of European rivers, official gauges, reservoirs and clearly labelled model data.
